I am a painter who specialises in portraiture, figurative art and still life. I am interested in the human form and face, character and the theatre of how we present ourselves to the world. I am concerned with the moments of life that are filled with contemplation, which is where my interest in still life painting lies. My portraits, particularly of women, often include some form of narrative or an element of theatricality. I am interested in the personas that we create to present ourselves to the world and how important our identity is to us.
My still life paintings represent stolen moments of reflection and stillness, in particular moments of loneliness that I felt when recovering from major spinal surgery. I spent many hours alone, in cafes where I would drink tea and think about art and life. My self-portrait is influenced by Van Gogh’s self-portrait paintings, in particular his ‘Self Portrait with a Bandaged Ear’ and the film At Eternity’s Gate, which I found very moving. Painting is a solitary endeavor and is often filled with angst and struggle that the artist has to navigate. I find the act of painting, though at times a psychological struggle, to be a meditative process, where time slips away and the artist becomes one with the process. - Jael O'Connor
