For the last 18 months I have been artist in residence at Brantwood, John Ruskin’s former home. I took the residency on specifically to experiment with new media (print, photography, 3D) and to explore new working methods (painting and printing on glass). I desperately want to continue with this, but unfortunately the launch of my solo show ‘Ruskin’s Reverie’, which is culmination of all this work, coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic.

I particularly wanted to move away from working with the landscape, which inevitably I have for the last 20 years (I hail from the Lake District), and move towards narrative and figurative work. Living in the north-west I feel geographically comprised between Scotland and southern England. Opportunities in the north-west are pretty limited, and I am unable to apply for many of the Scottish competitions, societies and events as I am neither Scottish nor have studied in Scotland.

I'm obviously limited to the opportunities I can take up in the southern counties particular London This hasn’t stopped me trying and I have had some success by becoming a member of the Society of Women Artists in 2014 which has enabled me to show work of a narrative nature. The opportunities available to enable me to become part of the art scene in London is difficult both financially and practically. - Kate Bentley, 2020
